The managing director of food market group Mercato Metropolitano, Amedeo Claris, is to step down from his role.

Claris, who joined the group five years ago as an executive director, is leaving to take up a new challenge, with Mercato founder and CEO Andrea Rasca continuing to lead the business as it prepares for its next stage of growth.

Mercato Metropolitano, which currently operates three markets across London in Elephant & Castle, Mayfair and Elephant Park respectively, set out a £35m global expansion plan back in January with an aim to open a total of 10 new sites around the world by 2025.

Early next year the group is set to launch a new 'neighbourhood concept' in London's Canary Wharf called MMy Wood Wharf, which is described as 'a distillation' of the larger markets operated by Mercato Metropolitano that's aimed at local neighbourhoods.

A long-awaited site in Ilford is also expected to open in the coming months.

"It has been a great honour to help build Mercato Metropolitano in the UK from the ground up," says Claris.

"I hope to see an MM market in every city in the world."
